Good Morning,
The School Cafeteria Discards Assessment Project (SCrAP) is a program developed by the Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) to quantify both food waste and related wastes (e.g. recyclables, to landfill) generated in cafeterias at K-12 schools nationally. The project aims to gather information regarding the quantity of waste generated in school cafeterias and obtain an understanding of how this waste is managed both at the school and after it is hauled away. They are partnering with the WWF to provide curriculum materials to the first 100 schools who sign up, schools can also win cash prizes for participation.
The program has 3 levels of participation, schools who have signed up to the two highest levels, Blue and Gold can win cash for their involvement. If the schools sign up for the highest level of participation, the Gold, and are among the first 100 schools to sign up they can then receive curriculum materials from the WWF, including the audit guide. The audit guide focuses on educating students to make better choices about lunch room habits, such as not taking milk if they do not want it, and utilizing a shared table for unopened prepackaged foods. The curriculum material and the audit guide focus on student habits rather than back of house lunch preparation and cooking.
The EPA for Region 4 is aiming to sign at least 30 schools for the highest level of participation with the WWF, and would ideally like more schools. More information can be found about the program on the EREF website (https://erefdn.org/school-cafeteria-waste/) including how to sign up, and why the program has been undertaken.
EPA Region 4 is planning on having a webinar for the program hopefully next week. The details will be forwarded as soon as they are available.

Organics are one of our focus areas in Florida for reducing waste, I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity.
