Several of you have expressed an interest in it. We are making it available to the you on = an "as is" and untested basis. We DO NOT recommend installing it unless it advertises a necessary function that you need and that is not available = in ArcGIS 8.3. We have not fully tested it and the user forums report = issues with it. Tallahassee users with a fiber connection to the intranet may use the = "one button" install from the web at http://depnet/gis/services/installs_index.htm Users not connected to the intranet by fiber may wish to use the = installation CDs we have shipped to the District GIS Coordinators (or IT Coordinators acting in that capacity). =20 Installation Notes - * With either install (network or CD), administrator privileges are = required to successfully install ArcGIS 9.0. * ArcGIS 8.3 tools (DataMiner and ImageTools) are NOT compatible with = ArcGIS 9.0. * Users CANNOT run ArcGIS 8.3 and 9.0 parallel. They must uninstall 8.3 prior to installing 9.0. * We recommend waiting for the 9.0.1 or 9.1 release of ArcGIS (coming in = Fall 2004). * Installation instructions are available on the intranet for network installs and included with the CDs for local installs. * A service pack is now available at the URL above. ArcGIS 9.0 for desktop GIS users offers several new features and = functions, including advanced Geoprocessing, the return of command line utilities, = and cartography tools. Advanced Geoprocessing brings back the AML = capabilities of command line ARC/INFO and adds to it a very nice "modeling tool" to = help define and implement a series of linked steps. This will be very useful = and enable us to automate a number of manual tasks. Also of note is the = ArcGlobe feature of 3D Analyst plus a number of new 3-D visualization = capabilities.=20 However, we are recommending that DEP GIS users continue to use the = current platform of ArcGIS 8.3 until the stability release of 9.0.1 expected for early fall is delivered (some stability and additional platforms). The expected release of 9.0.2 is early winter (stability commensurate with = 8.3, plus Network Analyst extension). The 9.1 release is slated for next = summer. If you want to test drive 9.0 but don't want the risk of instability, = you can do so via Remote Services. Contact Richard Butgereit who is hosting a = copy (richard.butgereit@dep.state.fl.us 850/245-8531). If you are willing to = take the risks, the 9.0 download is available via DEPNET and District GIS Coordinators or IT TechReps have installation CDs. ArcGIS Server is an exciting new technology to further leverage GIS use = by web users. As the software is also both complicated and expensive, = BIS/GIS and DWRM will be working together to assess the role of this technology within DEP. ArcPad 7.0 also offers increased performance and features and functions, especially when used in conjunction with geodatabases in ArcGIS. ArcPad = 7.0 will be available later this year. The folks who attended this year's conference are planning to host a brown-bag seminar in mid to late September. The date and time will be announced once it is scheduled.
