What is the GIS-L Monthly Newsletter?
It is an attempt to improve information flow among agency GIS users. =
Each
month the GIS Coordinators across the agency will be invited to submit =
timely
information. These submissions will be complied into a monthly GIS-L.
Central District Solid Waste maps are now available on the web!
In an effort to make our data more accessible and save time the Central
District has created downloadable maps of its solid waste sites. The =
maps
were created using ArcMap 8.3, then exported to Adobe Acrobat Portable
Document Format (PDF) and placed on the Central District web site. =
Acrobat
maps are relatively small and download very quickly. Despite their small
size, they're very detailed and the free Acrobat reader allows you to =
pan and
zoom in. These maps were created at the county level so you only need to
download the county of interest.=20
Click on this link to view the maps:

When we created these maps, we saved the map components as layer files =
so we
can easily update them at a later date using the same colors and =
symbols.
There's been a lot of interest from the public, especially consultants. =
As a
bonus, we find that our own Central District staffers are using them as =
well.

GIS Activities in the SWD - Oct 2004
The SWD has a GIS Team made of the 3 staff members that have been =
continually
involved in the following activities:
=20
=B7 Field verification of lat/long data for all IW and DW regulated =
facilities,
and associated ground water monitoring wells and outfalls. Updating WAFR
corporate database and creating maps showing facility features of =
interest
for regulatory staff.
=B7 Coordinating and collaborating with Groundwater Technical Staff to =
improve
the review of DMR data by combining spatial information with WQ trending
data. Auditing of online DMR data and trending water quality data to
facilitate review of regulated wastewater facilities by regulatory =
staff. It
is expected that the auditing and improved formatting of trended online =
data
will lead to better reliability of the online DMR data entry process, =
and
make obsolete the need to independently enter DMR data in an autonomous
database by SWD staff.
=B7 Facilitating and/or assisting in numerous GIS activities (training, =
mapping
or spatial queries) within the District, that include or benefit staff =
from
Bureau of Emergency Response, Air, Potable Water, IW, DW, ERP, and =
Criminal
Investigation Sections. Producing resource-at-risk reports and maps, =
upon
request by staff doing review of large projects for Development of =
Regional
Impact (DRI) applications, and Agricultural outreach projects.=20
=B7 Participating in Multimedia activities by providing database =
queries, in
order to facilitate the continuation of corporate data cleanup efforts, =
and
make more efficient the review of spatially related sites. Providing
necessary information - maps, GIS-based reports and assessments for
dissemination to the general public or for District staff to assist in =
the
comprehensive review of permit applications or compliance and =
enforcement
cases.=20
=B7 Actively participating in local and regional
GIS groups such as the Southwest Florida Coastal Conservation Corridor =
Team
effort and in LINKS (Local Inter-organizational Networked Knowledge =
Group),
hosted by the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission.
=B7 There is an increasing number of non-GIS
District staff, supported by the District GIS Team, that independently
continues to use GPS/GIS technology to routinely map proposed wetland
mitigation or conservation easement sites, map potable wells, verify
compliance of residual applications, facilitate habitat restoration =
projects
by creating and using shapefiles that delineate proposed restoration
activities such as exotic plant removal, calculate cost estimates of =
proposed
work, share restoration design plans with consultants, contractors and =
other
regulatory agencies.=20
