gis-l: ImageTools imagery in DataMiner

Dan,

BIS/GIS has plans to continue providing file based imagery on epic80. =
While
technically possible, the costs of maintaining ImageTools for only a few
users is cost prohibitive. In offices with extremely low bandwidth, the =
most
cost-effective solution will be to create and use local custom image
catalogs.

We've tweaked as much performance as possible from the ArcSDE raster =
services
and are running these through ArcIMS to boost performance. ArcIMS =
produces a
small 3 MB (plus or minus) png of the raster data your are viewing. =
This is
much smaller than even one DOQQ. In our testing we found that remote =
users
experienced response times in the acceptable range. =20

Thanks,
Chris Judd

Out here in the boonies, we have traditionally used ImageTools in =
ArcView 3.2
with a local library containing pertinent DOQQ's and DRGs. EPIC80 =
served as
a secondary library if a file was not mirrored locally. Can we continue =
to
use our local library as an automated source of imagery under ArcGIS 8.x =
or
9.x, or will be have to continue to load the required imagery manually? =
The
ArcSDE Raster server is much faster than ImageTools pulling across the =
WAN,
but may not be as fast as pulling imagery from a local library. Can
ImageTools be adapted to pull from a local library under ArcGIS 8.3 or =
9.0,
even if ImageTools is not supported by BIS/GIS?

Thanks,
Dan

Subject: gis-l: ImageTools imagery in DataMiner

GIS users,

The imagery found in ImageTools has now been added to dataminer for =
ArcGIS
8.3 and 9.0. BIS/GIS is planning to not support ImageTools on the =
ArcGIS 9.x
platform and use Dataminer as the GIS data gateway for the ArcGIS =
desktop
platform. This imagery includes:

DOQQs 1994
DOQQs 1999
DRG 250K
DRG 100K
DRG 24K ArcSDE Raster
DRG 24K File Based

District and remote users will find better performance from the DRG 24K
ArcSDE Raster layer, however, some data quality issue have been found in =
this
layer. Local Tallahassee users may prefer the file based 2k DRG data at =
this
time. =20

Please note: A known issue of ImageTools for ArcGIS desktop users is a
conflict with image catalogs. The DRG 24k file based data in Dataminer =
is
composed of an image catalog and can not be used in concert with =
ImageTools.
