GIS Users,
We are beginning to run into a bit of license contention for the
ArcGIS/ArcInfo and ArcGIS/ArcViewer licenses. We offer the following
suggestions as mechanisms to reduce contention and to mitigate the impact of
contention.
* Please be considerate of your colleagues and exit ArcGIS when you are not
actively using it.
* Also, the contention seems to be concentrated in the middle of the day, so
if you can plan your use for the beginning and end of the day, contention
will be reduced.
* Remember that if you are browsing data only, ArcExplorer is a free option
(no license is required) that will provide you with browse access to all the
ArcSDE layers, all the imagery, and any local shapefiles you have. You can
install ArcExplorer from the link below.
http://bis-4cgxh11/Custom/ArcExplorer9/ArcExplorer9.htm
* Additionally, if you are browsing data only, consider using Map Direct or
some of the other ArcIMS web mapping applications that are available. Map
Direct can be accessed from the link below.

* Other ArcIMS web mapping sites can be found from the Geospatial Resources
Index located at the link below.

Meanwhile, we are analyzing the license manager logs to determine the
business case for purchasing additional licenses.
Thanks in advance for your help in reducing license contention.
