GIS Users,

As you know, about 6 weeks ago we asked whether you preferred Data Miner or
Data Catalog. There were 40 votes for DataMiner, 33 votes for DataCatalog,
and 7 voters were happy to go either way. Since there was no overwhelming
preference, we started looking at alternative solutions to see if we could
find a mechanism that would take fewer resources to maintain and also provide
the features that both tools offer.

Based on our research, it appears to us that when we migrate ArcSDE to
version 9.2 or higher, we can use ArcCatalog and possibly metadata services
to provide the features of DataMiner and Data Catalog combined. As a result,
we will continue to offer DataMiner with ArcGIS 9.1 and Data Catalog with
ArcGIS 9.2 for now. When we migrate ArcSDE to 9.2 or higher, we will
deprecate both DataMiner and Data Catalog in favor of the ArcCatalog solution
that we get free "out of the box". We expect to be migrating ArcSDE versions
during the winter of 2007/2008.

Thanks for you input.

-Linc
