Good Afternoon,

ArcGIS Desktop version 10.1 is now available through the agency's concurrent use license manager. Use of this version is voluntary as we also support ArcGIS Desktop version 10.0. Please see the notes in the preceding emails below in your consideration of whether to use version 10 or 10.1.

Detailed installation instructions may be found here http://depnet/gis/software/arcgis101/InstallDesktop101.htm

Note: It will be very important to follow the uninstall/install instructions in a stepwise fashion skipping no steps as failure to do so may lead to conflicts that will render some or all functionality of ArcGIS desktop unusable.

If you are not an administrator on your computer you will not be able to install the software. If this is the case, please email the service desk for assistance.
Best regards,
OTIS/GIS

Subject: RE: Version 10.1 - Additional notes

Hello,

Great feedback on the earlier email...Thanks! Here are a few things to consider prior to deciding whether you wish to have version 10 or 10.1.

* If you share project files (.mxd's) commonly with others, you may need to consider compatibility issues. Users who have versions of the software earlier than yours may not be able to open your mxd's. In both 10 and 10.1 you can save your .mxd as a previous version by selecting the File menu option and then Save a Copy and then selecting from the Save as type any previous .mxd version. The recipient of your .mxd will be able to open your .mxd but it won't have any of the functionality that has been introduced in subsequent versions. Also, you can always ask your supervisor or division/district GIS coordinator as they may have a required or recommended version.

* Each version introduces new functionality that may be a guide to matching which is a better fit to your requirements. Here are a couple links to what is introduced in each (Thanks for the recommendation Ford Walton!)
What's new in ArcMap10<http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//00qp0000001r000000.htm>
What's new in ArcGIS 10.1<http://www.esri.com/news/arcnews/spring12articles/introducing-arcgis-101.html>

* Users have reported that users who have Bing ArcGIS online web services incorporated into their projects are not able to open .mxd's that contain these web services in 10.1. You may want to consider creating copies of .mxd's that have bing web services removed. Prior to upgrading, open the project in your current version, delete the Bing web service, and save a copy of the project.

* If you'd like Desktop Support to assist you with the upgrade, please send a service desk request after the upgrade instructions are sent next week.

* We are likely to support ArcMap version 10 for at least one more year.

While we don't have a set date yet, we will be upgrading the Spatial Database Engine (from SDE 9.3.1 to SDE 10) that composes our GIS library in the next few months. This change should be transparent to all users of versions 10 and 10.1. Users of version 9.x will no longer be able at that point to connect to our GIS library. More specific information will follow prior to that event taking place, but it is important to consider any impact that keeping version 9.x and encountering disconnectivity from the GIS library will have on your workflows and communicate concerns or questions you have to OTIS/GIS.

Thanks for your interest and comments!

Subject: Version 10.1

Greetings,

Just a reminder that we're still on track for rolling-out version 10.1 of desktop at the end of this month. I'll shoot to send out the detailed upgrade instructions next Wednesday the 31st. Please let me know if you have any questions at all about the upgrade.

The most notable change to the current plan will be reconfiguring the installation procedures to allow approved ArcGIS users the ability to uninstall previous versions and install the new versions as has been the convention in the past. OTIS's Desktop support section will still perform uninstalls and upgrades for those users who would prefer that for users who are not administrators on their machines.

Please let me know if you have any concerns/questions, I'll post responses that might benefit the broader group.

Thanks!

Subject: Frequently asked FDEP enterprise GIS questions - current OTIS/GIS projects - News

Good Morning,

Here are a few items that you may find helpful or interesting.

Question: When will ArcGIS desktop version 10.1 be available via FDEP's enterprise license pool?
Answer: OTIS/GIS is awaiting the availability of a new server from which to administer licenses for versions 10.0 and 10.1. The new license administrator and version 10.1 should be available by the end of July. Please note that OTIS/GIS will no longer be able to support version 9.3.1 at that point, you'll have a choice to use either version 10 or version 10.1. Detailed upgrade instructions will follow very soon.

Question: I have a question for ESRI, how do I make contact with them?
Answer: ESRI requires that OTIS/GIS staff must act as an initial point of contact for customer service requests coming from our agency. We maintain a knowledge base for questions and requests that are specific to our infrastructure and can many times provide an answer very quickly. From time to time however we encounter an issue that requires the insight of the developers who wrote the application, license agreement administrators or other ESRI staff. In these cases, we open a service request with ESRI and can get you connected directly with ESRI as soon as they reply (sometimes there is a delay caused by the difference in Eastern Standard Time and Pacific Coast Time where ESRI is based).

Question: Where are you?
Answer: We've been asked this far more than any one other question. If you need to find us in person, we have moved to the far southwestern corner on the 1st floor of the main office building in the Bob Martinez Complex. Please stop by to say hello if you get a chance.

What we're working on now:

* A new version of the agency's interactive web mapping application, Map Direct, is well along its development path. Version 6.0 is being designed with a lighter interface, will be more easily usable on mobile devices, will provide a number of ESRI ArcGIS online basemaps, include the ability to connect to REST web services from other providers like NOAA and ESRI, will show the users location on a map in near-real time on mobile devices, will provide an improved search tool with advanced geosearch capabilities like finding things like parks, schools and waterbodies in addition to addresses, improved compatibility with common web browsers and a smaller code base improving performance. Early feedback has been very enthusiastic.

* A new statewide aerial imagery layer composed of Florida Orthophoto program (USGS certified) sources flown in the 2010-2013 timeframe.

* Upgrading SDE to version 10, in the fall/winter 2013 timeframe. The change should be transparent to users within the agency who are using desktop versions 10 and 10.1.

News:

Several programs (FGS, TMDL, ERP-WEDS) within the agency participated in USGS's National Enhanced Elevation Assessment survey about 18 months or so ago. This survey was designed to determine the state's needs of LiDAR based elevation products for the purpose of developing a national program to create GIS data products like higher resolution Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), contours of elevation, etc. Survey respondents contributed to a successful outcome for Florida. Of the 50 states in the nation, Florida was ranked highest, along with California in terms of priority of needs. The hope is that this will lead to improved elevation products for Florida sooner rather than later helping many others employed in environmental protection, emergency management, water supply, climate studies, fisheries and wildlife management, forestry, transportation and other industries.
