Ivan,

Yes, T2 speaks the truth that ISDM is mandated by law. It is also true =
that
the DEP ISDM is a very slim document and many of the deliverables are =
given
only a very general description, sometimes not much more than a name. =
You
may wish to take a look at it:

http://www.dep.state.fl.us/applications/docs/isdm.pdf

What we do here to further define the deliverables is write 'standards'. =
 For
example, a quick description of an Entity Relationship Diagram in the =
ISDM
has been fleshed out an extensive document with naming conventions, how =
to
put an ER into Oracle Designer, which Designer reports to submit for =
review,
etc. Current standards are available on the BIS Applications web pages:

http://www.dep.state.fl.us/applications/standards.htm
http://www.dep.state.fl.us/applications/toolkit/tkdefault.htm

The standards can and do change over time as our needs change. For =
example,
for a large multi-year integration project like the IMS Project, we had =
to
put a number of more substantial standards in place. (The ISDM calls =
this
'customization'.)

The ISDM is more than ten years old so you are correct that it did not
anticipate object oriented development methodologies. (Of course, we =
are not
fully in the object oriented world even with our J2EE projects because =
we
have a relational database which J2EE projects share with non-object =
oriented
development.)

To handle "what's hot" in development, once again we can use the =
technique of
customizing via new standards. That's what we were talking about in =
email
yesterday, what changes we may need to make to such deliverables as the
Impact Assessment and Migration Deliverables to make them appropriate =
for
J2EE development. While it might be a stretch to map some of the ISDM
deliverables to good object oriented practice, I personally don't see =
any
problem with modifying the deliverables I just mentioned to work with =
JHS
and/or HP-UX J2EE application server deployment - THIS JUST NEEDS TO BE =
DONE
BEFORE ANY J2EE PROJECTS NEED THESE DELIVERABLES.

If Linc wants to create and maintain web pages on JHS that provide the =
ISDM
customized by a set of standards appropriate for J2EE development, I =
think
that would be great. (The key word here would be 'maintain'.)

Thanks.

Barbara

For those recipients not aware of the link in question:

http://epic51.dep.state.fl.us/gis-mdf/ and the menu on the left side of =
the
web page.

They are placeholders..... as Linc's project progresses the docs he =
creates
for his project would be filled in, or the links adjusted so that they
reference a document stored elsewhere but hopefully available via the =
web.
If not available on the web, storing the docs in a "well known location" =
is
certainly okay from the JHS perspective. =20

As Linc explained in his forwarding email, not every doc in the ISDM =
list
would necessarily be used. Some projects are too small to warrant the =
full
ISDM suite of potential documents. We used to call this tailoring of =
the
document list to suit the specific needs of a project.

It should also be pointed out that the ISDM methodology is apparently
mandated as Terry Tizzard showed me. This particular methodology is =
ill
suited to small, rapidly developed J2EE (Object Oriented) projects. In
general the methodology in the ISDM is ill suited to modern Object =
Oriented
software development.
