Hello Teresa,
In 2003 when our pharmaceutical workgroup was drafting Best Management
Practices, we asked our industry experts about color coding. We found that
no standards currently exist. This is seen in the industry:
Color
May mean:
Red
Biohazardous, Infectious, Regulated Medical
Yellow, White
Chemotherapy - Trace/Debris or Hazardous Waste
Blue
Chemotherapy-Trace/Debris
Purple, Magenta, Yellow
Radioactive
Dark Blue
Hazardous Waste
I love the idea of coding HW status into drug databases such as the one used
by Pyxis. I'm not aware of anyone doing this, but will check. ac

Subject: [Pharmwaste] Marking Pharm Waste for Disposal Type
Our hospital pharmacy is looking to somehow color code the pharmaceuticals
for hospital patients so that the end user (nurse, other) would know what
container (i.e. hazardous waste container, yellow "chemo" container, etc) to
put it in. We are also looking at putting a message in the "Pixus"
dispensing system to alert the nurse that is taking the drug out that it is
hazardous waste. We are trying to make it easier for the end user to
determine how to dispose of it. Is anyone else doing this? What has worked
for you? What hasn't worked for you. Comments are appreciated.
