[Pharmwaste] RE: Pharmwaste digest, Vol 1 #71 - 4 msgs

The Northeast Recycling Council's (NERC) project on the disposition of
unwanted medications includes a container disposition component on which I'm
the lead. The report will be available in the Fall.
We're compiling data on medication containers, prescription and
non-prescription, both from published sources and pilot collections. Our
research shows that medication bottles are predominantly HDPE (#2) with
amber prescription vials made of PP (#5). Amber prescription vials, in
particular, are a very consistent, homogenous stream. The few exceptions to
PP composition we found in our pilot were clear vials that contained
veterinarian, extremely old and foreign-filled prescriptions. Most bottles
are coded with the standard recycling symbols. In addition, the amber
prescription vials are also visibly-separable. I see no reason why markets
that accept HDPE and PP shouldn't accept empty medication bottles.
I would be interested if anyone knows of any reasons, real or perceived,
that markets won't accept empty medication bottles or vials (e.g.,
contamination, purity, volume). In addition, is anyone aware of any
recyclers that specialize in these materials.

I have been a very interested reader of pharmwaste and am happy that
this list exists. One question that I think was posed and possibly
answered was, "are there recyclers of medicine bottles that exist in the
U.S.?" A similar question, below, came over another national list and I
looked for pharmwaste archives and did not find them. Do archives
exist? Answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.
