Hello Laurie:=20

Thank you so much for initiating the pharmwaste listserve. The exchange =
of
information has been extremely beneficial. =20

Currently, in Portage County (central Wisconsin) we are beginning to =
gain
momentum in our goal of not only a pharmaceutical collection, but also
disseminating usable information for the general public. I have an =
intern
from the local university working on this project this semester and he =
has
really done a great job...due in part to the sharing in information on =
the
listserve. Right now it looks like we might be linking up with two
neighboring counties and a major clinic for our collection events in the
spring and summer. Now we have to get local law enforcement on =
board...they
are not incredibly cooperative. However, the district DEA chief agent =
is
highly supportive of the work. =20

At the state level there is also some stirrings....=20
Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin-Hazardous & Special Wastes
Workgroup has taken on pharmaceutical disposal as one of its major =
goals. We
have been given a block of time at our annual conference for the purpose =
of
discussing this issues and presenting information from various expects. =
We
have also discussed how advances in human genome project might move the
administration of drugs more suited to the individuals physiology and =
result
in lower excretion rates. Or, possible scientific advances that develop
technologies that will assist WWTP to better treat and degrade these
compounds. Or, perhaps policies that focus on public education on =
suitable
disposal options. Lots to talk about... =20

I am a member of the Governor's Blue Ribbon Task Force on Waste
Disposal, Recovery & Reuse. The Task Force has discussed this issue and
admitted that it is one that merits investigation in our goal of
comprehensive solid waste management policy review. Additionally, at a
recent public comment session the Milwaukee Metro Sewerage District =
submitted
comments emphasizing the need to investigate and develop policy
recommendations about this important issue. =20

Thanks again!=20
