CHEMICALS: EPA to be questioned on endocrine disruptor failures, group says

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments will host a public forum
in the spring next year about endocrine disruptor chemicals and what it
claims are the failures of the U.S. EPA to develop a program to test
chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenol-A for their hormone-like effects
on human health, officials announced today.

Reps. James Moran (D-Va.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) will lead the forum
(David A. Fahrenthold, Washington Post, Dec. 4).

In September, U.S. Geological Survey officials said that male fish with the
capability to develop immature eggs inside their sex organs that were first
found in a West Virginia stream in 2003 are present upstream in the Potomac
River in Washington, D.C., raising fears that there are endocrine disruptors
polluting the water that scientists were not finding in repeated water
quality tests.

The House Government Reform Committee subsequently held a hearing on the
discovery, asking EPA officials to explain how they are protecting human
health and the environment in the Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and
West Virginia regions that take drinking water from the Potomac (Greenwire,
Oct. 24). -- RJD
