Hello everyone-

As many of you know I attended the National Unused Drug Disposal conference in Portland, Maine this past October. One thing that we worked on was to develop a national solution to the proper disposal of pharmaceutical waste. The attached letter is not ideal for wastewater agencies but it will definitely get the message out to the major offices at the white house.

At the conference, the Office of National Drug Control Policy stated that the number of people who misuse prescription medication for the first time is greater than marijuana. Based on this information the letter is geared for the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Even though this letter is not ideal, we plan on signing onto the overall premise of the letter.

Feel free to contact me if you require further information.

Regards,
Karin D. North
City of Palo Alto

Subject: National Unused Drug Disposal Proposal - For Your Immediate Attention

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

Colleagues:

A proposal for a National Unused Drug Disposal Program, while subject to further refinement, is now posted. It represents the joint efforts of a number of collaborators associated with the Maine Benzodiazepine Study Group and Unused Drug Disposal Group. This initative grew out of the convening of the Fourth Annual Maine Benzodiazepine Study Group International Conference and the Third Annual Unused Drug Return International Conference held October 23-24, 2006 in Portland, Maine.

We invite you to review the proposal and encourage strongly your endorsement. The proposal can be reviewed and your endorsement can be provided electronically by completing and submitting the response form posted at:

 <http://www.mainebenzo.org/2006letter.htm> www.mainebenzo.org/2006letter.htm

We believe this represents one of the most significant opportunities to date to bring this critical issue to national administration attention and strongly encourage broad scale participation in the endorsing process. This document (including the list of endorsing individuals/organizations received by the posted deadline) will be sent to the federal officials listed in the proposal. Endorsements received after the posted deadline will be maintained and drawn on at the next stage as the proposal process unfolds.

Although this letter is being sent to all conference participants who attended the Fourth Annual Maine Benzodiazepine Study Group International Conference and the Third Annual Unused Drug Return International Conference, we encourage those individuals to forward this endorsement request to other individuals and organizations that you anticipate would be supportive of the initiative.

Given a short timeframe, we have set a deadline of Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at 4:30 pm. for the receipt of the first round of proposal endorsements.

Thank you so very much for your support.

Stevan E. Gressitt, M.D.

Lenard W. Kaye, D.S.W./Ph.D.

Secretaries

Maine Benzodiazepine Study Group and Maine Unused Drug Disposal Group
