Hi Karin,
Based on data from pilot collections in Maine and the Bay Area, I
estimated 18-35% by weight of liquids/gels/ointments in their packaging.
Compared to pills, they are infrequently seen, but because they have a
much higher density, the proportion by weight ends up fairly
significant. After doing cursory screenings of waste in our PH:ARM
pilot, it looks like waste we are receiving has roughly the same
proportions.

Alice - Do you have any eyeball estimate based on your bucket screening
to date?

Subject: [Pharmwaste] Pharmaceutical Waste - Percentage of Liquids
Hello everyone-
A group of us are working on crafting a mail-back program in the San
Francisco Bay Area, California. I know that Maine has legislation for
the mail-back of pharmaceuticals, but we are still working with USPS to
get approval for residents to mail back their unwanted medications to a
DEA registrant.
Right now USPS has an issue with mailing liquids. During our collection
event last May 2006, we did not quantify the amount of liquids. I was
wondering if anyone could send me an estimate of the amount of liquids
that would be sent through the mail. It would be great if you could
send me a percentage.
Thank you for your help.
Best,
