Might want to check with Christina Bailey at Heritage (based in Indianapolis, IN) - understand they handled clean-up of RX waste in 5 of the 6 New Orleans hospitals shut down by hurricane Katrina. (Disclaimer not an endorsement).

Daniel:

By the RCRA "mixed and derived from" rule - if there are any substances in the compound that would be considered to fall under the solid waste heading, subset "hazardous Waste".
http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/osw/hazwaste.htm#hazwaste
Then you must handle it all as hazardous waste.

My suggestion would be to look up a couple (3) quality disposal contractors and get their input as to types / quantities.

I would suggest trying organizations like Veolia, Heritage, Clean Harbors etc.
(Disclaimer - not an endorsement or limitation for any organization).

[Pharmwaste] Request for Disposal Info for a Compounding Pharmacy

My name is Daniel Miller, a student pharmacist for the University of
Iowa. I am currently on an experiential rotation at a compounding
pharmacy, where they create original drug products from multiple
ingredients. They have alot of expired chemicals that need to be
disposed of properly. I am curious if anyone knows of a good
resources for COMPOUNDING INGREDIENT DISPOSAL. Many of the products
that need to be disposed of are not active ingredients, but excipients
that are purchased in bulk when making
ointments/creams/sprays/capsules/etc.

Thank you,

Daniel Miller
