[Pharmwaste] Federal RegisterApril 30th

Your question is a good one and brings up an interesting point. There
are pharmaceuticals that currently meet the definition of hazardous
waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Only those
pharmaceuticals would be impacted by making them Universal Waste, since
Universal Waste is a subset of hazardous waste. This amounts to about 5%
of all drug products currently on the market today. Except for some
states that have more stringent definitions of hazardous waste, or
specifically list some pharmaceuticals as hazardous wastes, 95% of all
drugs on the market today can be disposed of under RCRA as non-hazardous
solid waste. That would not change by making the hazardous portion
universal waste.

I have a question that I feel is probably a stupid one, but I'm asking
anyway because I don't know waste terminology as well as you folks. If
pharm waste is perhaps going to be added into the universal waste rules,
what is it classified as right now? Does this include household pharm
waste, or just commercial/industrial?

Michigan has already included pharmaceutical waste in their
universal waste rules. Any other state do that?
