[Pharmwaste] Laundry Detergent that provides sun protection

Bill,

In this case, the manufacturer does not appear to be making a drug claim
(i.e., that the product is "intended for use in the diagnosis, cure,
mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man or other animals,"
such as preventing sunburns), so it would not be regulated as a drug (or
any other category of product that FDA regulates).  It appears that they
are claiming to reduces transmission of excessive UV-A and UV-B radiation
through fabrics to the skin (using UPF as a measure of that), not that they
will prevent sunburns (via SPF).

Interesting - apparently Made by Ciba (the active chemical) - known as
Bemotrizinol

Wiki said it's not approved for sale in the US by US FDA - so I checked out
EPA's registered database - that search is pasted below.
(That Wiki statement may be obsolete) - EPA's database should be current
though.

Then I went to Cibas' site - and did the required registring to look at the
MSDS - guess what - they still won't let you.

Hmmm........... Choose Wisely.

Laundry detergent claims to provide sun protection too

 When Sharon Doering does laundry, she's not only trying to get her clothes 
 clean. She sprinkles in a little sun protection.                           
 "I'll wash pretty much everybody's clothes in it, so at least for that     
 week, I know that everybody's kind of got added protection for their       
 clothing if we're really going to be in the sun," Doering said.            

 The manufacturer of one of the products, Sunguard, claims the additive     
 washes in an invisible shield. It supposedly has an ultraviolet protection 
 factor of 30 that stays on the clothing through twenty laundry cycles.     

 "I have yet to see any long term studies on whether that works but the     
 idea that you can do one more thing in your daily life is key. The thing   
 is you have to make sure your patient understands that this is just one    
 part of the picture," Dr. Jodi Ganz said.                                  

 The other part is protecting yourself from sunburn by using common sense.  
 Stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day and use a sunscreen   
 with a SPF of 30 or higher.
