impacts of depleted uranium exposure on Gulf War vets and civilians --- Sue

Hi Sue,

Yes, very interesting and well written. As you might expect, the research is
suggestive of a link but it is far from conclusive. Tests of the type
described are generally used to identify possibilities that will require
animal tests and other detailed research. The article appears to be saying
that animal testing is underway.

I am impressed by both the research and the reporting. The report does
include some ambiguous statements that could be misinterpreted. For example,
she says that exposure to uranium has been linked to lung cancer, kidney
damage, and bone disease in Navajos. It depends what she means by "linked."
The only clear scientific empirical evidence of a linkage is for kidney
disease. Surprisingly, no direct data exists for humans and lung cancer
because the effect of uranium from uranium mines is overwhelmed by the
much-greater radiation effect of radon gas and its progeny. This does not
mean that there is no effect and, in fact, scientists are certain that
sufficient exposure will increase the risk of lung cancer. The linkage to
bone disease has been suggested but subsequent research has failed to fine a
linkage.

The linkage of uranium with breast cancer in Navajos is extremely weak.

Many other factors are far more likely to be the culprit, such as fat
consumption and many other lifestyle changes. To her credit, the reporter
identifies some of these possibilities and presents opposing views.

I would generally favor the tightening of drinking water standards proposed
in the report, primarily because of kidney damage concerns.

All in all, it is a good study and worthy of more in depth research.

Best,

Sam

Subject: Alliance of Organizations Meeting - MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Hey Folks,

Thanks to all that responded to my last email regarding a strategy meeting
to discuss our plans to stop uranium mining in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
After giving a week for response, it appears that SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 2008
from 10:00 AM TO 6:00 PM Will work for the majority of us. The location will
be St.
ch,&near=Halifax,+VA&fb=1&view=text&latlng=36766929,-78931967,48337832169249
06426> John's Episcopal Church, 197 Mountain Rd., Halifax, VA 24558.

I have taken the liberty of providing a tentative agenda for our meeting. I
have extensive experience (in the business world) in training and planning
formats. With that said, I only did this because no one suggested a meeting
format and I feel, for us to use our time effectively, we need a mechanism
to be productive. Please review and comment on this suggested agenda.

Thank you so much for participating! I look forward to each of you sending
me an RSVP to sccchatham at yahoo.com and to seeing you on the 29th.

Gregg
