[Pharmwaste] FW: [h2e] RE: drug take back at hospitals?

Hi John,

So glad to see Hospira involved in the process! Are you aware that
Capital Returns has received a grant to receive consumer medications
from two Wisconsin counties? My understanding is that DEA is considering
a waiver for the pilot although it has not come through yet. You may
want to contact Mary Hendrickson, Director of Regulatory Affairs and
Quality Assurance at CRI for more information. Mary can be reached at
(414) 459-8252 and mary.hendrickson at capitalreturns.com. To my knowledge
this is the first mailback pilot using a reverse distributor and could
serve as a national model.

Best regards,

Thanx for a response John ("reply to all" and you'll get the entire
listserve group),

Just another example where one federal agency stymies another in trying
to be a good steward of the environment. Good luck in your quest. I've
found out it's not a real hot topic at (at least our) state legislative
levels, nor in D.C. These grass roots' level attempts seem agonizingly
slow to get started and sustainability, hopefully will not fade into the
shadows along with the program.

Funding? Where's our corporate stakeholders? Walgreens? CVS?
Wal-Mart? Anyone have a good inside contact with any of our larger
pharmacies' environmental managers?

Both websites you've included are great!

I have not responded using this system before (and am unaware of if it
goes back to everyone, or just the author).

But, I have just investigated my company setting up a disposal day for
employees to bring in old Pharm products , and home Haz Wsts. We will
likely exclude controlled drugs based on the rules requiring police
depts. to be on site, to take an inventory, to take the Controlled drugs
back to the police station, and to separately contract for their
disposal.

I found this page to have some good links.

http://www.iisgcp.org/unwantedmeds/3HTHAC.html

DEA folks can not ignore the regulation that only allows the person to
whom the prescription was written, to posses the Controlled drug after
it is prescribed.

The Product Stewardship Institute is another resource.

Good one Laurie! Have you had any pharmacies join you in your take-back
programs? Seems almost impractical when you have to have a law
enforcement agent "in your back pocket" to satisfy the DEA regs. Or has
your DEA contact said residentials are exempt from having to have the
long string of "cradle to grave" documentation?

For our AR H2E partners, I'd like to ask the same question as Laurie,
only add the word "...thought of..."; "...any hospitals 'thought of"
having a permanent take back program for consumer drugs?"

I am combining two of my program areas with this question - do any
hospitals have a permanent take back program for consumer drugs? If so,
I'd love to hear from you and get you in contact with a person in
Florida who wants to add to the other permanent collection sites she's
established in her county.

Thanks for any help -
Laurie
