Many of the natural items mentioned contain oils. Oil of lavender, anise,
citronella, eucalyptus, geranium, rosemary, thyme and etc. where registered
pesticides and still may be. Orange peels contain citric acid a registered
pesticide. Products may contain registered pesticides and are not pesticides
in the product if there are no claims of mitigating a pest. I had a book
titled Chemicals:What you need to know but is no longer in print. Maybe I
should get it published again with a different publisher. The book contained
hundreds of chemicals found in products that are used by homeowners and
their hazards. Below is an example of some of the chemicals.
Dr. Ron Ney
MY MORNING IN THE BATHROOM-HAZARDOUS?
TOOTHPASTE
We wake up in the mornings and brush our teeth with toothpaste to clean our
teeth and refresh our mouth, to fight cavities, remove plaque, reduce
tartar, etc., but what else are we doing? Are we poisoning our bodies by
this regime? Are toothpastes safe? Read on and you judge.
Let's start near the beginning of the alphabet with the toothpaste
Aqua-fresh and review its label. It is stated that it contains no
sugar--great, but it contains sodium saccharin. Yes, sodium saccharin which
is a suspected carcinogen. This chemical can be metabolized in the body to
form a carcinogenic metabolite. Most products that contain saccharin have
safety precautions on the label. Why not toothpastes?
Now let's review the ingredient statement and the ingredients one-by-one.
SODIUM FLUORIDE-which is said to be safe. However, it is a poison--yes it is
a pesticide and is used to kill pest. It is an insecticide, fungicide and
rodenticide; a wood preservative; water purifier; disinfectant; etc. It is
toxic by ingestion; a tissue irritant; etc.
HYDRATED SILICA--silica is toxic by inhalation and its dust can cause
silicosis. Silica is also a pesticide.
SORBITOL--is toxic by ingestion, may cause hypermotility and diarrhea.
GLYCERIN--glycerol is a pesticide; used in cosmetics, soaps, and hydraulic
fluid; etc. It is toxic by ingestion; can cause headaches, nausea and
vomiting; is an eye and skin irritant.
TETRAPOTASSIUM PYROPHOSPHATE (TKPP)--is used in soaps and detergents; etc.
PEG 8--is a polyethylene glycol series of carbowax chemicals of which some
are toxic; irritants; questionable carcinogens; etc. I do not know which
glycol is PEG 8 nor its hazards.
TETRASODIUM PYROPHOSPHATE (TSPP)--is used as a water softener; in soaps and
detergents; metal cleaner; food additive; etc. It is toxic by inhalation; a
poison by ingestion; etc.
SODIUM LAURYL PHOSPHATE--a phosphate. We know that phosphates discharged
into waterways are harmful to aquatic life--what about here.
TITANIUM DIOXIDE--a pigment in paints; etc. It is an irritant; a
questionable carcinogen; etc.
FLAVOR-is unidentified on label.
XANTHAN GUM-is used in foods; drilling fluids; etc. Hazardous--we don't
know.
SODIUM SACCHARIN--a carcinogen.
SODIUM BENZOATE-is a pesticide; food preservative; in tobacco; etc. It is a
poison; an experimental teratogen; etc.
Red #30 Lake, Blue #1 and Yellow #10--like PEGs there are just too many dyes
to search out. Many are toxic; carcinogens; etc. If they contain
an--azo--if in the chemical name, there is a good chance that it is a
carcinogen.
I wonder the ADA (American Dental Association) accepts products like this
without considering all ingredients?
SOAP
Now that we have brushed our teeth and shaved, we are ready for a bath or
shower. OH! An electric razor was used and no skin preparations were used.
If such preparations or shaving cream were used, then we would have to
consider the chemicals in them.
The bath soap that was used is Irish Spring; a deodorant soap and skin
conditioner. Now let's examine the ingredients.
SODIUM TALLOWATE, SODIUM COCOATE and/ or SODIUM PALM KERNELATE --are soaps.
One or more of these chemicals may be present at any one time and at some
percentage. There is no way for the consumer to know what soap, how much or
if they hazardous?
WATER-- ok.
COCONUT and/or PALM KERNEL ACID-I will consider each chemical separately.
Coconut --is not very specific, because there is coconut acid, coconut oil,
etc. which can be soaps, etc. We know that coconuts can contribute to high
cholesterol when eaten, but we don't eat soap, and we don't know if they are
hazardous or not. Palm kernel acid-- is not specific, because it could be
palmitic acid, palm oil, etc.
STEARIC ACID--is naturally occurring in animal and vegetable fats. It is
poisonous, a skin irritant, a questionable carcinogen in experimental test,
etc.
FRAGRANCE--not identified, many are hazardous.
GLYCERINE--is a skin conditioner. It is toxic by ingestion, an eye and skin
irritant, etc.
SODIUM CHLORIDE--is salt and a pesticide.
LANOLIN--a skin conditioner and can contain cholesterol esters of higher
fatty acids. Hazardous?
TRICHLOCARBAN (TCC)--also 3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide is a pesticide
(bacteriostat), antiseptic, a disinfectant, etc. Hazardous?
TITANIUM DIOXIDE-is white paint pigment and a food additive. It is a skin
irritant, a questionable carcinogen, etc.
STANNIC CHLORIDE--also tin (IV) chloride; etc. This tin compound is toxic
by inhalation, an eye, skin and mucous membrane irritant, etc.
TETRASODIUM EDTA--also known as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid; etc. This
is a tetrasodium EDTA compound, meaning it contains 4-sodium atoms. I
couldn't find out if it is hazardous, but it is known that disodium EDTA
compound contain 2-sodium atoms and they are toxic by ingestion, an
experimental teratogen, etc. What about tetrasodium EDTA?
BHT-also known as butylated hydroxytoluene; etc. Similar cresols like this
are questionable carcinogens. What about this one?
D&C GREEN and FD&C GREEN NO. 3--ARE DYES/COLORS. There are just far too
many of these to trace; however, it is known that many are carcinogens.
FD&C Green No. 3 is a questionable carcinogen.
SHAMPOO
During the bath the hair is shampooed. In this scenario Pert PlusR was
used. Let's look at its ingredients.
WATER--ok.

SODIUM CITRATE--is used in foods, detergents, etc. Hazardous?
CITRIC ACID--a pesticide. It is toxic by ingestion, an eye and skin
irritant, may cause allergies, etc.
D&C GREEN NO. 8 and D&C YELLOW NO. 10--Hazardous?
FD&C BLUE NO. 1--is a questionable carcinogen in experimental test.
UNDERARM DEODORANT
Now that we are dry underarm deodorant is used. In this case it was BanR,
which is an anti-perspirant and deodorant. This product does have warnings
such as, "Do not apply to broken skin", why? "If a rash or irritation
develops discontinue use", what could cause this?, "Keep out of reach of
children", why?. Maybe a review of the product ingredients will help us to
understand the warnings.
ALUMINUM CHLOROHYDRATE--is also used in water purification and treatment of
sewage and certain plant discharges, etc.; it must be strong stuff.
WATER--ok.
PPG-11 STEARYL ETHER--there are too many PPGs to check out but many are
known irritants.
STEARETH-2 AND STEARETH-20--again there are far too many to check out.
These are a type of polyoxyethylene alcohols also polyethylene glycols
(PEGs) which are used in detergents, cosmetics, industrial uses, etc. It is
known that polyethylene glycol is toxic by ingestion, an eye irritant, a
questionable carcinogen in laboratory test, etc.
HAND/BODY LOTION
Perhaps our hands or body is dry; therefore, a lotion is used. In this
scenario VaselineR Intensive CareR with Vitamin E was used. The ingredients
are discussed.
METHANOL--a pesticide. It is toxic by ingestion, an eye irritant, etc.
WATER--ok.
GLYCERIN--is poisonous; toxic by ingestion; an eye and skin irritant; etc.
C-11-13 ISOPARAFFIN--. Some paraffins are carcinogens, what about this?
GLYCOL STEARATE--also ethylene glycol monostearate; etc. this chemical is an
irritant, etc.

carcinogens what about this?
TRIETHANOLAMINE (TEA)--a pesticide, is an eye and skin irritant, a
carcinogen in laboratory test, etc.
TOCOPERYL ACETATE (VITAMIN E ACETATE)--Vitamin E has shown reproductive
effects in laboratory test.
CETYL ACETATE--Hazardous?
-.
GLYCERYL STEARATE--Hazardous?
MAGNESIUM ALUMINUM SILICATE--Hazardous?
DEA-CETYL PHOSPHATE--DEA also called diethanolamine and diethanolamine is
toxic. Hazardous?
CETYL ALCOHOL--a pesticide. Hazardous?
DIMETHICONE--a silicone oil. Hazardous?
ACETYLATED LANOLIN IN ALCOHOL--Hazardous?
FRAGRANCE--not identified. Hazardous?
HAIR GROOMING
Now let's comb our hair, but what will we put on it to hold it in place?
Gillette--The Dry Look--styling gel was used. A look at the ingredients
follows.
WATER--ok.
BORIC ACID--a pesticide and it is poisonous by ingestion.
TRIISOPROPANOLAMINE--a pesticide and it is an eye and skin irritant, etc.

EDTA-also called ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid; a pesticide and it is an
experimental teratogen, etc.
METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE and METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE--. Hazardous?
MOUTHWASH
Time for breakfast but first the mouth wash ListerineR was used. There are
warnings on the label and they are; "Do not administer to children under
three years of age", why? "Keep this and all drugs out of reach of
children", why? "Not for ingestion". There must be a reason for these
warnings, let's find out by reviewing the ingredients.
THYMOL--a pesticide, a preservative, used in perfumery, etc. and it is a
poison by ingestion, reproductive effects in experiments, an allergen, etc.
EUCALYPTOL--if this is eucalyptus oil then it is poisonous by ingestion, a
skin irritant, etc. It is used in cough medications, perfumery, etc.
METHYL SALICYLATE--a pesticide, used in beverages, foods, etc. and it is a
poison by ingestion, an experimental teratogen, an eye and skin irritant,
etc.

WATER--ok.
ALCOHOL--a pesticide and it is a confirmed human carcinogen, an experimental
teratogen, etc.
BORIC ACID--a pesticide, used in foods as a preservative, in perfumes, in
flavors, etc. and it is toxic by ingestion, an eye irritant, etc.
POLOXAMER 407--is one of a series of nonionic surfactants--polymers.
Hazardous?
CARAMEL--Hazardous?
TOILET PAPER
If we stay away from colors we would be better off, white paper was the
choice. Is white paper died? If so, what is in it? If titanium dioxide is
used, we know it is a skin irritant, a questionable carcinogen, etc. If it
is just a bleach process, then it could contain the carcinogens called
dioxins. No information on this was found.
LOZENGER
Just before finishing in the bathroom, a cough developed, and a HallsR
Mentho-LyptusR lozenger was used. The ingredients are now evaluated. Note,
the spelling of the ingredients are exactly as they appeared on the label.
MENTHOL--a pesticide, etc. and it is an irritant to the mucous membrane,
etc.
EUCALYPTUS OIL--is used in perfumes, mouthwash, etc. and it is a poison by
ingestion, a skin irritant, etc.
COLOR--not specific. Hazards?
FLAVORING--not specific. Hazards?
GLUCOSE SYRUP--this may be glucose syrup or just glucose. There many types
of glucose and the specific one is not declared on the label. Hazardous?
SUGAR--may be hazardous for some people.
SUMMARY OF THE MORNING IN THE BATHROOM
It should be noted, that some of the ingredients listed are pesticides
registered by the U. S. EPA. However, they do not have to be declared as
pesticides because, they were no pesticidal claims.
Of the chemicals this newsletter could account for, the following exposure
is noted.
EXPOSURE TO TOTAL NO.
OF CHEMICALS
pesticides
21
toxic ingredients by ingestion
16
carcinogens
3
questionable carcinogens 10
teratogens
1
experimental teratogens 6
toxic ingredients by inhalation 2
irritants
19
This is appalling, isn't it? Just look, how many bad chemicals a user could
be exposed to in about one-half hour and that isn't all folks. The
aggregate, antagonistic and synergistic effects are also not considered in
the hazard evaluations by government regulators nor are the co-metabolism
and co-biometabolism.
