I loved that. I am not seeing support for the flushing concept from
anyone on this list. It is too complicated to educate around, not
everyone is on municipal sewer, the list is obviously based on the
premise that controlled substances are so desirable that not even mixing
them with cat crap will deter users--that is after they sort through all
of the thousands of bags of garbage put out on garbage day in their
neighborhood to find them.

As a list service with a broad subscription base, can we just inform the
ONDCP that we don't agree and most of us in government who are
responsible for telling people how to properly manage waste are not
using their advice and don't plan to? I've even informed our
pharmacists in MN not to use that advice, but to use ours for our state.

This will no doubt get me on some Federal watch list or something like
that but.....

Does it not seem incredibly silly to have such a big issue come down to
the DEA wanting to control controlled substances coming back for proper
management when its a safe bet any of us could visit a major city and
purchase some kind of controlled substance from a very uncontrolled
source?

yes there are possibly people who work in pharmacy's who may
misappropriate controlled substances but I'd guess thats such an
astronomically small number that the trade offs between damaging the
planet versus the possible theft aren't even close. Its not like they
can't already get the same material in a cleaner form if they wanted it
so why is taking some back that may not be all that safe to take be such
a huge new temptation for them? Because you know if you were say
profiling a population for likely criminal activity, I'd be focusing
immediately on a group that has these traits: college educated, hard
working, tax paying professionals who work in a field where they
participate actively in caring for the sick...now thats a group of
people I'd immediately assume would be needing close watch.

Unless the DEA has some sudden new program to eradicate all illegal drug
activity, perhaps its time for them to stop being so difficult to work
with on this topic and show some leadership?

Drinking water wells are not supposed to be drilled or located downhill
from a septic system due to potential contamination; this could be a
problem with many older homes as this was not considered in the "old
days." However, there is the possibility that contamination could occur
even with distances reqired for new wells from private septics.

Some folks still (I hear) use their personal septage to fertilize their
gardens, especially young, organic farmers here in NC who are a part of
the "back to composting" movement who have composting toilets. Most
rural people with septic systems (like me) are required to get them
pumped every so often and - of course the septage and sludge is then
disposed of at the local WWTP.

It seems that the concept of "Do Flush" does not take into consideration
that many homes and facilities that are not served by a Publicly Owned
Treatment Works (POTW) have septic systems. Flushing drugs into a
septic system, aside from disrupting the system (i.e. antibiotics can
kill the bacteria that treats the effluent) it can pose a problem to the
groundwater and hence any nearby privately owned water supply wells?

Does anyone have a copy of the updated "Do Flush" list from the DEA as
it relates to certain controls? I understand that number grew from
around 12 categories.
