[Pharmwaste] State survey of pharmaceutical disposal guidelines

Hi all.

Thanks, Jan, for sending the link to this document.

FYI, the table in the report indicates that Wisconsin requires nursing homes (and other LTC facilities) to destroy meds within 72 hours of a physician's order discontinuing its use, the resident's discharge, the resident's death or passage of its expiration date. The Wisconsin Dept. of Health and Family Services (since renamed the Department of Health Services, or DHS) has informed the facilities to whom this requirement applies that they will WAVE the requirement if the facility has identified an acceptable, alternative means of disposing the material (read: an alternative to flushing/pouring), and provided they can ensure safe, secure storage in the mean time.

I wonder if any organization can assemble the state-by-state DEP recommendations for flush/disposal/take back? Or has it already been done? This would be valuable info for the nation's wastewater agencies.
