[Pharmwaste] Re: Pharmwaste Digest, Vol 47, Issue 6 - Hand Sanitizer

We are studying evidence based design for healthcare systems. In the next 10 years, we will invest more than $250 billion dollars in new construction of hospitals and clinics. We hope to explore improved design and systems innovations for the built environment that would promote better health outcomes and safety for patients as well as safety and productivity of the healthcare workers. Also, issues of environmental sustainability would cover waste management within and outside of the facility.

One topic of concern is how to reduce the rate of hospital-acquired infection. A curious question came up...'about how long does it take for a dropped object to be contaminated?" If Allen drops his baloney sandwich on the floor, the "standard" window of time for safe recovery is about 5 sec. After that, the sandwich is considered contaminated.

But I wouldn't eat anything dropped on the floor of our operating rooms. Standard turn around time for a room is approx 15 mins--the time one surgical patient leaves and another one enters in a busy OR. This includes removal of all soiled, contaminated equipment, and used supplies; clean and disinfect all surfaces; dry surfaces, set up machines and equipment, new sterile table and field for the next procedure, and receive another patient from holding.

I think I'll skip the sandwich.
