As far as prevention goes, has anyone yet seen any traction in the idea that the pharmaceutical industry's new focus on "green chemistry" could include designing drugs so that they more rapidly degrade after doing their job?

>From the policy experience here in Maine could I suggest the following. Inded waste prevention is the best policy, so how and where in the system does that take place? At the prescriber's office. It is a great opportunity to address 2 populations: prescribers can be asked does the prescription you write today really need to be that long? And the publican be asked, when you see your health care professional be empowered to ask do I really need this much medication for this long? And then what can you do to help me get rid of it if I can't take it or don't need it? I'd also suggest talking to your state medical association and see if they could co-sponsor as there might be better public uptake and to your state CDC.
Just a few thoughts.
And the reference to policy I made at the outset. After our Medicaid office recognized that they could save by cutting the first prescription from unlimited to limited 15 days as a maximum for reimbursement they instituted it as a policy. One MD called me up and said that they were going to adopt that policy with all of their patients regardless of the insurance company.

Hi Sarah,
As you know, the best management is no waste, so I would suggest including source reduction tips. Encourage the public to ask their docs for a non-pharmaceutical treatment; such as physical therapy, neti pots, exercise and diet, trial and smaller prescription sizes.

Hi everyone -
The NM Environment Department is developing radio spots to educate the general public on the issue of pharms in water supplies and to encourage folks to utilize take-back programs if they are available. Has anyone done advertising like this before, or does anyone have any advice or transcripts that you could share with me? I'm finding it difficult to address everything I want to in a 30 second ad. I may have the option to expand it to 60 seconds but only if it's "interesting". :) Thanks in advance.
