Subject: Pharmaceuticals Issue questions for Take-Back Study
PSI is doing some research on pharmaceutical take-back programs and we have some questions to which you, the collective group, might have answers or input.
Your thoughts are much appreciated:
1. Estimates for the quantity of unused prescriptions vary widely (3% - 40%). Do you know of any definitive studies on the issue? Have you conducted or participated in a study yourself and, if so, what were the results?
2. Prescription and OTC sales data are often quoted in dollars or in number of prescriptions. Does anybody know the average weight of those prescriptions?
3. Alternatively, are there data out there about how much of each form (pills, liquids, patches, sprays) of prescription or OTC drug is sold, and how much each weighs?
4. What do you identify as the key barriers to increasing the quantity of unused pharmaceuticals collected and safely disposed?
5. What alternatives or ideal solutions would you like to see implemented for
a. better public education about proper disposal of unused medications?
b. higher collection results?
c. more and more sustainable funding?
d. safer disposal?
Thanks in advance!
