[Pharmwaste] RE: sharps

Sharps should not be mixed with collected pharmaceuticals. Unsterilized used needles can transmit disease and cause infections if someone gets pricked. Additionally, sharps require separate handling since they can cause problems with the machinery at incinerators. If an entity wanted to collect sharps in a heavy duty container, they would need to check with their disposal facility to see if they can accept them.

There are mail back companies that sell postage paid containers to collect sharps in, which can then be mailed to the company for destruction. www.Sharpsinc.com<http://www.Sharpsinc.com> is one company I am familiar with, but I'm sure there are others.

Subject: [Pharmwaste] sharps

Greetings,

For the states that have already been collecting in pharmacies (like Iowa), what are the experiences with sharps? Are pharmacies providing a separate collection container for sharps adjacent to the container for other pharmaceutical?

Thank you,
Deb
