[Pharmwaste] County of Contra Costa, CA the 13th U.S. county to adopt pharmaceutical EPR ordinance

Today, the County of Contra Costa became the 13th county in the U.S. and 8th in California with a pharmaceutical EPR ordinance as the County's proposed Safe Drug Disposal Ordinance<http://64.166.146.245/docs/2016/BOS/20161220_831/28209_Ordinance%20No.%202016-24%20Introduced%20and%20Approved%2012.13.2016.pdf> was adopted on consent. The Board of Supervisors voted last Tuesday<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByG7rqqWh8U&feature=youtu.be> to move the ordinance for adoption in a unanimous 5-0 vote. The ordinance comes into effect 30 days from the date of passage.

Please find attached a joint press release from the coalition of ordinance supporters including Central Contra Costa Sanitary District, Clean Water Action, CPSC, Delta Diablo District, the National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse, and others.

Many thanks to the diverse group of stakeholders who supported and provided input during the process. Together our advocacy resulted in the Board of Supervisors amending the Ordinance to make two substantive changes:

1.       Stronger enforcement language

2.       Inclusion of over-the-counter medications



County staff will return to the Board with an update by July 2017 and work to address multiple additional items including the makeup of the Stewardship Organization that implements the program to be listed as a 501-c3 and adding specificity to the method of medication disposal.
