[Pharmwaste] Amended DEA-Registrations Allowing for Controlled Substance Collection

Ditto, on what others have said about the DEA's process to register as an
authorized collector being simple and fast.

Also important to note that pharmacies may also need to notify, or seek
approval from, their state pharmacy board or other state entities that
regulate them. My understanding is that such processes vary significantly
from state to state.

In WA state, the Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission must review and
approve the plan (ie protocols) of any pharmacy taking back household
medicines. This is also not an onerous process, but it requires action at a
Commission meeting. That process was in place in WA prior to the
finalization of DEA's regulation on take-back of controlled substances, and
there have been a number of retail pharmacies in WA accepting return of
non-controlled medicines for many years.

An outline of the WA Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission process is here:

Substance Collection

Greg,

We have heard from several hospitals and other locations that have modified
their DEA registrations to reflect "collector" status. It is very easy and
takes about 15 minutes. As I understand since this is done all on line, the
registrant is able to print a copy of their amended license immediately.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

I was wondering if any pharmacy subscribers to this listserv have gone
through the DEA-registration amendment process to allow them to collect
controlled substances in collection receptacles.

If so, would anyone like to comment on the ease of DEA's on-line amendment
process and tell how long it took from the time of submission of an
amendment application to receipt of DEA's acknowledgment that the amendment
was approved?

Thanks.
