[Pharmwaste] FW: Anyone using Cactus Sink?

Greeting Pharmwaste Listserv members:

I stumbled across the thread below from several years ago regarding the Cactus Smart Sink product. I have received an inquiry regarding this product, and have been researching it.

Can anyone offer any information or experience they have with this product? Does anyone know how it works? The company has a FAQ sheet that is available at:

https://static1.squarespace.com/static/56412dd3e4b0e6862edd7028/t/56428194e4b024d1dbe1b763/1447199124871/Cactus+FAQ.pdf

This FAQ sheet states the following:

· Liquid waste is “filtered through a proprietary mixture of denaturants and deterrents and it is converted to a semi-solid state … rendering waste unrecoverable, non-retrievable and unusable.”

· Solid waste is “captured through a one-way pill maze and patch slot, secured, and rendered unrecoverable, non-retrievable and unusable with a proprietary liquid mixture.

Despite the fact that the product clearly uses chemical reagents, I can’t seem to find MSDS for any of the reagents used in the Cactus Smart Sink.

In addition, for my fellow RCRA nerds: Has anyone looked into the issue of whether or not the Cactus Smart Sink qualifies as a “satellite accumulation container” under RCRA hazardous waste requirements? In addition, if they do qualify as satellite accumulation containers, does the use of the Cactus Smart Sink constitute treatment of any hazardous waste put into them? Does RCRA allow treatment of hazardous waste in satellite accumulation containers (EPA guidance does not seem clear on this point)?

Thanks,

Just a reminder there are very few controlled substances that are haz waste, primarily chloral hydrate and testosterone gel. Some preservatives that get diluted out if used as IVs.

Hi Donna and all,

If there are hazardous waste controlled substances going into the SmartSink, then there are WI DNR/EPA regulatory issues. The resulting waste cartridges, which I believe Cactus takes as a reverse distributor, would likely be considered hazardous waste and Cactus would need both hazardous materials endorsements on their trucks, but the waste would have to go to an EPA permitted facility.

Also, if HW, there may be “treatment in container” rules involved. Best to speak with your WI DNR rep.

Hope this helps.

Just found out this morning our hospital is trialing Cactus Sink for controlled substance med disposal on two inpatient units and the emergency department – anyone else using it? Any concerns/comments? Thanks…Donna Lotzer
