The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issued a press
release this morning, January 9th, announcing establishment of the Colorado
Household Medication Take-Back Program. To date, 45 locations in 24
Colorado counties have been established at law enforcement agencies, retail
pharmacies, and hospitals/clinics with on-site pharmacies. The department
has contracted the services of Assured Waste Solutions, LLC, located in
Gastonia, North Carolina, for the receipt and destruction of collected
medications.

The program is funded through a $300,000 annual legislative appropriation.
The Colorado Solid and Hazardous Waste Commision adopted rules and
regulations governing the program in May 2016. These rules are attached
along a copy of Colorado House Bill 14-1207 that formally established the
program. An important aspect of the legislation was the establishment of
liability protections for program participants that comply with the program
in good faith and comply with applicable laws.

The department continues to expand the program with a goal of establishing
at least one collection location in each of Colorado's 64 counties.
