It is good to see Cardinal Health investing more in solutions to this
problem. The Generation Rx program that they have sponsored for some years
is engaging pharmacy students in my region.
On Cardinal's support for take-back, they are focused on sponsoring
take-back events rather than supporting ongoing secure drop boxes. A
significant drawback of drug take-back events is that residents have to wait
until the collection event to safely dispose of their medicines, meaning
that residents are storing potentially dangerous medicines they don't need
in their homes for longer periods. Collection events have to be operated by
law enforcement, and are more labor intensive to organize and more costly to
promote than an ongoing drop box that is available year-round. It would be
more effective in protecting the community, and more cost-effective I
believe, for Cardinal to support ongoing secure medicine drop boxes in
pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals as now allowed under the DEA's Rule.
