in 1997, FDA reversed its ruling that prohibited direct marketing of drugs to consumers after a heated political debate on whether the American public is educated enough to understand drug information and make the right choices. With great support and encouragement from pharma companies, the FDA decided that a nation whose reading level is at the 4th- 5th grade level could digest and understand pharmaceutical info. From 1998 to 2005, a brand new marketing industry grew from zero to more than $6 billion just adverstising and promoting prescription drugs in every imaginable media and manner. We now have to deal with patients and families coming into appointments and demanding brand name drugs. And we have a pretty good idea which commercial is most effective. On the average, 4 out of 5 patients leave the doctor's office with one or more prescriptions.
