Burke,

What an excellent Background paper on your project in CA!! I'd like to incorporate some of your findings in our National Directory of Drug Take-Back and Disposal Programs (US). We have been surveying active take-back programs across the country and compile our survey responses in the National Directory. Was there any attempt or thought about identifying the drugs that were collected? I know Dr. Joel Kriesberg of Teleosis has been analyzing a wealth of data in Northern CA.

We also maintain the National Unused and Expired Medicines Registry to collect data on returned meds. I'd be happy to chat more about this database with you.

Many of you may be interested in the background paper we just released today. It evaluates all types of home-generated pharmaceutical collection programs—in terms of efficacy, safety, statewide accessibility, and cost effectiveness—by type in California based on surveys completed in the last few months. We received an 86% response rate from 207 out of 241 known continuous collection sites, 46 of the 53 known events, and 3 of the 3 known pilot mail-back programs in California.

The background paper and attachments are available at the bottom of this page: http://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/Actions/PublicNoticeDetail.aspx?id=217&aiid=217

I should caution that the results in California are not necessarily representative of the results throughout the country because currently only law enforcement programs dispose of home-generated pharmaceutical waste within the state.
