December 7th, 2010
Carole Cifrino carole.a.cifrino@maine.gov 207-287-7720

(AUGUSTA)— The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has completed its first report under the Maine Product Stewardship Law and is seeking public input. The DEP will provide the report and all comments received to the legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Natural Resources by January 15, 2011.

Product stewardship is a public policy that moves responsibility for the management of products at the end of life from local governments to the private sector. This shift can provide local tax relief and enhanced environmental protection while creating opportunities for new and expanded businesses in Maine. The report proposes products as candidates for new product stewardship programs and improvements to Maine’s existing product stewardship laws.

Interested parties can review the report, titled Implementing Product Stewardship in Maine, online at www.maine.gov/dep and may submit comments to the DEP until January 7, 2011. Comments and any questions should be directed to Carole Cifrino by phone at 207-287-7720, email carole.a.cifrino@maine.gov or by mail to 17 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04333.
