Maureen, I have been meaning to reply to your email. We set up the National Unused and Expired Medicines Registry since 2005 to collect data from samples on unwanted medicines returned to drug take-back programs. Here are the classification systems we use to classify each drug:

DAWN for therapeutic classification (in progress of augmenting ATO system)

US Census for geographic and demographic info (pop-based)

AWP for cost analysis

JANUSInfo for environmental risk and hazard assessment

OSHA MSDS for potential chemical exposure (in progress)

FDA NDIC databased for QC and estimate of standard packsize

E Commission for herbals and botanicals

DEA/NDIC controlled subst database for schedule classification and QC

I hope this helps. We do data analysis for participating programs and occasionally get commissioned to prepare summary report to various agencies, state and federal. We don't do regular reporting at this time. Incidentally, we conduct annual survey to identify and list drug take-back programs and events. We publish the results in our official National Directory of Drug Take-Back and Disposal Programs. We have listed more than 400 programs and events across the country. If you are involved with such program and wish to be listed, please let me know.
