The Second Amendment was written in a time when only a very few people had guns and was intended to allow these people, and others who were so inclined, to be armed in a regulated militia. It was in a time when a very young country with no standing army had large, powerful external enemies. <br><br>Unfortunately,here in the 21st century in the immortal words of Pogo - "We has met the enemy and they is us!" <br><br>Yes, we no doubt over medicate our youth - and our population in general - but that does not excuse the fact that those very few "over medicated" have the ability to kill dozens of people with the blast from a single weapon. Twenty children and six adults shot multiple times in the span of several ten's of seconds. <br><br>Not all the evidence is in for the Newtown massacre - that is exactly what it was, a massacre - but I would be willing to bet the the shooter was under medicated. either way, the question remains - why is it necessary for anyone but combat personnel to have semi- or fully automatic weapons? <br><br>Does the esteemed Dr. Piazza have an answer for that?<br><br>In all fairness, let me say that I do not own a gun, would not own a gun. I see no need for the general population to have guns aside from those who hunt or target shoot. Evidently, I am in the minority in this country. That is very frightening. <br><br>Fred L.
