<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif";color:black">Another option, that is working well in my county, is to have a regional storage facility.
<br>
We bought a 20' trailer and placed it within a secure yard at the Sheriff's building. Small PD's, that don't have much secure storage space, were then able to have a drop box. Some departments empty their box (into a hinged lid transport container, sealed
with a numbered security tag) and transfer custody directly to the Sheriff. Others store it for awhile and make larger deliveries.
<br>
<br>
Without the DEA pick-up, I think the Sheriff will have to drive to the incinerator twice a year. If we had more transport containers one trip per year might be enough. We are lucky, the incinerator is only 1.5 hours away and fee is $300 per load, no weight
limit. The Sheriff's trailer holds 3000 #. If pharmacies in our area start collecting, the amount that law enforcement takes in should decrease, probably leading to once a year incinerator trips. The same result could likely be achieved if funding for more
containers was obtained. <br>
<br>
Considering the two key requirement for drop boxes, I wonder if two officers will need to be on pick-up/incinerator runs?<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif";color:black">Completely agree. We are already getting questions from law enforcement here as well. The nearest incinerators for pharmaceuticals from my area are an 8-10 hour
drive. The DEA days provided convenient disposal options for local law enforcement. Now, those departments that installed receptacles are strapped for resources (both personnel and financial) for disposal.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif";color:black">Our program (which kept all of the non-controls) has a contract with a waste manager to pick up our non-controls and take them to an approved incinerator for disposal
at ~$0.70 / pound. We're going to check with our contractor to see if they meet the new criteria to pick up controls as well. If so, perhaps we can arrange for additional stops at our local law enforcement sites. This would sure beat our officers trying
to use "high end burn barrels." <o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Tahoma","sans-serif";color:black">Another idea is some sort of joint effort between law enforcement. Our area is primarily rural. If one department rents a truck every six months, or so, and
has an officer drive from dept to dept picking up the meds....then driving them to the waste management/reverse distributor site, that might work.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

What I’m hearing from a few law enforcement offices is that they are wondering what their options will be now that the DEA collection has ended. Fortunately for us, we have 2 hazardous waste incinerators in Ohio and I believe they are charging about $1 per

a year.</span><span style="color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
