Great Lakes Clean Water Organization (GLCW) was founded in 2008 in Northeast Michigan. The mission of GLCW isto promote the collection and disposal of unused/unwanted drugs in a safe and approved manner. Proper disposal of Rx-Waste helps keeps our drinking water, lakes, rivers and streams clean, keeps our kids safe and makes our communities a better place to live.

In 2009 GLCW started the Yellow Jug Old Drugs program. Yellow Jug Old Drugs was created to encourage individuals to properly dispose of Rx-Waste rather than flushing unused medications down the drain. Trace amounts of medications have been found in municipal water systems and surface and ground water systems across the country. The Yellow Jug Old Drugs Program started in the Great Lakes region and is now available across the US.

Due to the expanded scope of the program beyond the Great Lakes Region, the non-profit organization has changed it’s name from Great Lakes Clean Water to Great Lakes Clean Water/US Clean Water (GLCW/USCW)

The goal of Great Lakes Clean Water/US Clean Water is to operate the Yellow Jug Old Drugs Program at the lowest cost, while providing extraordinary and professional customer service to encourage as many pharmacies as possible to participate.

GLCW/USCW is the first non-profit organization in the United States to be licensed as a Reverse Distributor by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). Reverse Distributor designation is required to accept controlled substances from pharmacies for proper destruction. GLCW/USCW is one of 27 Reverse Distributors in the country.

Chris Angel, President GLCW/USCW states. “Water is vital to everyone. When I do a presentation on the topic, I start by asking participants to raise their hand if they drink water. All hands go in the air. Everyone wants clean water!! This is an environmental issue that working together as a community of concerned, active individuals we can do something about.”

The organization chose Detroit to serve as its Operation Center to be able to expand its scope of services and programs in Michigan and across the country. According to Angel, GLCW/USCW is the only environmental organization in the US whose primary mission is to promote collection of Rx-Waste to keep our water clean. Angel states, “We are seeing people who might not have been involved in environmental issues previously, now taking an active part in keeping their water clean by proper disposal of Rx-Waste. This is leading to growing interest for many to become involved in other environmental and community causes.

Being the only environmental organization focusing on Rx-Waste collection and disposal makes GLCW/USCW unique and its new corporate office and operations center is unique as well.

Built in 1927 the new home of GLCW/USCW was originally known as the Jefferson Avenue Evangelical English Lutheran Church. Jefferson Avenue was one of the first Lutheran churches in Detroit that held services in English. Over the years, this historic and architecturally significant building provided a place of worship and celebration for many Detroiters.

As the new home of GLCW/USCW the building enters a new era. It will now serve as the Corporate Office, Operations Center and Community Education Venue for the Great Lakes Clean Water/US Clean Water Organization.

Re-use of an already existing structure is the ultimate recycling project. Adapting a building for new use is a demonstrable way to model proper stewardship of all resources and also provides working model in sustainability

The historical integrity of the building will be preserved while complimenting it with contemporary and environmentally responsible improvements such as water and energy conservation. The building will thus remain an asset to the neighborhood and the surrounding community.
