Since late 2016, the State of Colorado has been operating and expanding its successful Household Medication Take-Back Program, utilizing the contracted services of Assured Waste Solutions, LLC of Gastonia, NC. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in partnership with the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention and numerous stakeholders, used a stepwise approach to establish the program through legislation, Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission rulemaking, an annual $300,000 legislative appropriation, and program promotional campaigns. More than 80 collection sites have been established to-date at law enforcement agencies, retail pharmacies, hospitals and clinics. The department is working to achieve the Governor's goal of establishing at least one permanent collection site in each of Colorado's 64 counties by the end of 2018. The annual appropriation allows the department to meet this goal and establish multiple locations in more heavily populated counties or counties most heavily impacted by the opioid abuse epidemic.

In order to provide a centralized, consistent message for Colorado residents on the proper disposal of unused household medications, the program is branded to the website takemedsback.org. need it. There was a lot of traffic just before and after the DEA rules became effective, which was very helpful. The latest areas of interest are product stewardship actions to get manufacturers on board to help deal with the waste issue; and the ongoing
discussion of 45’s approach to the opioid crisis, as Ed shared earlier. Catherine is correct that we should be pushing upstream. I think the list serve still has value and if you can hang on awhile, I think it is worth it.

national dialogue on the emerging issue of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment. There has been a steady decrease in activity, participation, and general discussion. This is not to say that pharmaceuticals and personal care
products are no longer an environmental concern but rather that the need for this listserv may be waning.
