<p>A new report from the American Enterprise Institute (a nonpartisan, right leaning, think-tank*), due out next month, takes the cost estimates for the opioid epidemic, issued by the CDC & CEA ($504 billion), and estimates how these costs are broken down:

  state-by-state, per capita by state, and as a share of state GDP.  The author previews some findings here: </p>

<p>My analysis shows that the nonfatal per-capita economic burden of the opioid crisis is highest in the District of Columbia ($352 per resident) and lowest in South Dakota ($162 per resident). Adding fatalities, as CEA did, gives West Virginia the highest
