As of December 30, 2016, an Administrative Law Judge invalidated a proposed pollution notification rule promulgated by the Department, which required owners of installations throughout the State of Florida to report pollution events to the local government as well as a local media outlet to notify the general public of the event. Protecting Florida's pristine environment is our top priority and DEP will continue the public pollution notification process to ensure all Floridians and visitors are notified of pollution incidents. Moving forward the notification process from the Department may change, however it was imperative that the notification to the public continued seamlessly. The incident below was reported to the State Watch Office and is being forwarded to you because the event has occurred in your area. For more information or should you have any questions, please contact Lauren Engel at Lauren.Engel at dep.state.fl.us<mailto:Lauren.Engel at dep.state.fl.us>

* Date and time of incident: 01/25/2017, date that third quarter sample reviewed.
* Location of incident or discovery: 1850 Heard Bridge Road, Wauchula, FL 33873, location of the Potable Water System
* Suspected source and cause of incident or discover: Natural deposits in aquifer.
* Type of pollution, including substance or contaminant names: Radium 226
* Amount of pollution: 8.47 pCi/L, maximum contaminant level for combined radium 226 & 228 is 5 pCi/L
* Potentially affected areas beyond installation property boundary: Unknown - These contaminants are naturally occurring in regions of Florida.
* Potential risk to the public health, safety, or welfare: Radium 226 is naturally occurring radionuclides that are contained in the soil that water moves through. Some areas in Florida may have higher levels of radium due to phosphate rich soils and rock. There is no immediate health risk or need for residents to change their daily routines or to find an alternate source of water. The standards take into account the potential health effects contaminants can have on populations that are most at risk. Federal safe drinking water standards are calculated so that a person would need to drink two liters of water that exceeds the standard every day for 70 years before having an increased chance of adverse health effects. However, if residents have specific health concerns, they should consult their doctor. The elevated levels of Radium 226 occurred because the community's water softening system had not been functioning properly. It has been replaced with a new system, and was put into service on February 20, 2017. This correction should immediately resolve the issue.
* Identification of parties notified of incident and time notification occurred. DEP notified 02/03/2017; Residents notified 02/20/17
