Jay,
I'm just guessing and maybe you're already working with versioning:
if you are working in a multiuser environment, without versioning, the
problem could be that the feature is locked by another user. Maybe ArcMap is
giving you this error, but the info dialog box shows the message: 'empty
geometry'.
If this is the case, you may try to use versioning to manage your editing
workflow.
I hope this helps, please contact me if you'd like to discuss in more
detail.

Subject: shrug-l: Sporadic Empty Geometry Errors
We are editing a geometric network stored in SDE. We get intermittent
"operation attempted on empty geometry" errors. The odd facet of this error
is that one user may experience the error while attempting to trim a
specific line; another user (from another physical location) can go to the
same feature and perform the trim operation successfully. This would seem
to indicate to me that the "empty geometry" error is not the root cause; if
there really was a problem with the geometry it shouldn't be possible for
ANY user to successfully perform the edits. Any thoughts on possible causes
for such an inconsistent behavior? Any way to determine if this is caused
by a database issue, an Oracle/SDE issue, or a network issue? Thanks.
