shrug-l: average distance between points

Hi all, does anyone know of a method for determining the average distance
between an irregularly spaced point dataset? I am constructing a
semivariogram for kriging interpolation and have approximately 250 points
surveyed in a nearshore environment for sand displacement monitoring.
Preferrably, I would like to calculate a mean distance representing
distances between sample points.  I can do it by designating neighbors
within a 150 feet radius or the entire dataset if possible. I will sum!
