shrug-l: difficulty with the 8.3 "Identify" tool

Despite removing then adding the identify tool, rebooting, and even
reinstalling ArcGIS 8.3. I cannot get the identify tool to work. By =
putting
this question out there, I'm sure I'm about to discover that I've made =
some
careless mistake, but I'm willing to swallow my pride.
