Yes and strangely enough I understood them all.
=20
I understand that DELL is proposing this and of course I just want to
ensure we (1) get value from it and (2) minimize any impact on our user
community - both if done right certainly can be accomplished.
=20
We are currently on 9i/Solaris and 8.3. It appeared to me that 8.3 is
only certified by ESRI/ArcSDE for 9i (not 10G) and on something other
than the enterprise version of RedHat we are using. I am thinking that
we might wish to do this pilot/testing using ArcSDE 9 and Oracle 10G as
there are performance benefits to both and some issues we are dealing
with in ArcSDE 8.3 would be eliinated in ArcSDE 9 (like the issue of
locking the sde log and temporary tables when gsrvsr exits). We are
also planning on loading Rasters in the near future and I think that
this would be better supported with the functionality available in
ArcSDE9. I understand that our clients would have to be upgraded
beforehand as the clients must be at the same level as ArcSDE. I
envision the test to be initially in a wholely separate environment from
either our current dev/test so we might do some comparisons for awhile.
=20
I also have experience with migrating various versions of Oracle to
various platforms and I cannot do my nice/jiffy clone process to get
Oracle 9i on Solaris 2.9 to Oracle 10G and Linux - I suspect that a full
database export/import will work. Since it is a full oracle database
export/import it shouldn't break any of the relationships between the
ArcSDE catalog, the GDB objects (for ArcObjects) and the layers. =20
=20
I have a number of scripts/processes and environment variables setup in
our current Solaris environment using the korn shell. However, Linux
should allow me to run these scripts/processes using the same type of
environment (including Oracle OFA) as we are currently running by just
basically copying these over - maybe a few slight changes with bsh. =20
=20
I also imagine that an oracle direct export compressed through a pipe
would be the way to go and I have scripts available for this. This
would make the export process faster and also there was a 2Gb limit on
exports (will have to check 9). Then of course reanalyzing the objects
with the ArcSde call to dbms_stats... for all of the layers.
=20
Question:
=20
-how big was your system?
-what specific platform/version did you migrate from and to?
-how long did it take?
-what was the performance gains you experienced?
-how was the migration performed - using oracle export/import, using
sdeexport....?
-any gotchas? =20
=20
=20
Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
Paula

Yes, some of us at SJRWMD do participate on this list and we would be
glad to share our experience moving to a Dell / EMC / Linux / Oracle /
SDE implementation. Is that enough acronyms

Dell is offering to come in and save us a lot of money by moving our
systems to Linux versus Solaris. Does St. John's water management
participate in this list? Can they tell us how this upgrade process
went for them?

Thanks,
Paula
