I forgot to mention that I use to live in the Keys (Big Pine Key).  =
While
living down there, I realized that the US 1 (or Overseas Highway) mile
markers did not jive with my odometer.  I eventually realized that the =
mile
markers were placed during the original road construction in the late =
1930's
after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane destroyed the Key West Extension of =
the
Florida East Coast Railway (FEC).  By the way, the FEC mile markers ran =
the
opposite direction from 0 in Jacksonville, FL to 522+ at the end of =
track in
Key West.  So, when the new US 1 bridges were built in the 70's and 80's =
or
when realignments of the highway occurred, they did not readjust all the =
mile
markers over the entire 128 miles, but just "fudged" the ones effected =
by the
new construction.  So the Overseas Highway mile markers can vary from =
0.8
miles to about 1.2 miles between mile markers.  That's why the road =
builders
rely on engineering "chaining" station distances for construction,
maintenance, etc. and not the mile markers.  Same is true of railroads
(including CSX, FEC, etc.).  Because of this, I had intended to GPS in =
all
the actual locations of the Overseas Highway mile markers, but moved out =
of
the Keys before I had the chance to.
