shrug-l: Buffering points

Is there a way to take a layer of points and create
polygons based on the density in an area.  I am
thinking about taking the highly concentrated points
and displaying it in a ramped symbology to create a
better visual of what is going on.  An example that
may be similar would be a temperature map created from
ground observations at different points.  I have
spatial analyst and think the function would be there
but could use some help.
