shrug-l: shape to text?

Thanks to all that replied.
However, I'm interested in reading the geometry data---point coordinates for
all shapes, plus any other related info, like false X and Y, grid sizes,
etc.
This is contained in the .shp file. The .dbf file only contains the
attributes.
It seems that there should be some way to open and read a .shp file. I'm
guessing that there are tools for this, but haven't found any so far.
