shrug-l: shape to text?

Daniel,
There are some extensions that will write the X,Y coordinates into the
DBF file. I would recommend looking on ESRI's Support website for such a
creature. Another way though longer would be to write the shapefile to a
coverage then from coverage to an E00 file. The E00 is an ASCII text
file and would have all the coordinates.

Thanks to all that replied.

However, I'm interested in reading the geometry data---point coordinates
for all shapes, plus any other related info, like false X and Y, grid
sizes, etc.

This is contained in the .shp file. The .dbf file only contains the
attributes.

It seems that there should be some way to open and read a .shp file.
I'm guessing that there are tools for this, but haven't found any so
far.
