shrug-l: Help with X,y

When I try to add x,y columns to a point set, ie -89.0, 40.3,  The 
columns values end up as -89.0 4.03
I have tried x-tools and  and another program and get the same results, 
then if I delete '4.03' -89.0 becomes -8.9

Where in the program does it set value widths?
